Hey Gang,
This is about the only way to stay cool these days. Thought you
might enjoy this photograph taken by MAAC member and local
photographer Eugenia Johnston. It cools you off just looking at
it.
There are some great events coming to our area in the next
few weeks.
If you want to really get hot and shop til you drop, you might
want to take advantage of the World's Longest Yard sale on August
5-8. It takes place on Lookout Mountain Parkway and the Highway
127 corridor. You won't have any problem finding it. It is
everywhere.
For something a little cooler, you won't want to miss the 102nd
DeKalb County Fiddler's Convention that will take place at the
Fort Payne Middle School on August 7, 2010. Participants in
nine categories will compete for over $3000 in prize money.
Admission is $8 per person and proceeds go to fund the Arts in
Education Program in Fort Payne sponsored by the Big Wills Arts
Council. Contests begin at 12 noon. This is an incredible
event so make your plans now to attend.
Looking ahead, MAAC founder and former President, Sandra
Comley is offering a two day workshop on August 11 and 12 in
armature building for sculptural and architectural cement.
Sandra, an architectural sculptor, will guide a process for
participants that will begin from a prepared footing and
proceed through armature building, formula mixing, and
application of ferrocement as used in a variety of sculpture
and architectural projects. All skill levels are welcome.
The fee is $100 per person and there are limited spaces
available so reserve your spot now by calling Sandra at
256-634-3334 or emailing her at
poetsc@hotmail.com.
There is a really interesting event coming up
on Saturday, August 14, 2010, at 7:30 PM at the Moon
Lake Community Library in Mentone. It is holding a
Sidewalk Stargazing event to honor the memory of
Roger Dowiat, a Mentone native and avid stargazer.
The Atlanta Astronomy Club will headline the event
with a lecture at 7:30 and then a move outside to
look through their telescopes at the
stars. Everyone is invited to attend. You don't
get many chances like this so mark your calendars
and make plans to attend.
Looking down the road, the Circus is coming to town on
Saturday, August 21, 2010. It's not the kind of circus you
may be thinking about but it will be great fun!! No, there
will be no animals but there will be a Critter in it. That's
Carl "Critter" Orand and his new band, Hillbilly Circus. The
band is led by Jonathan Alverson whose style falls somewhere
between George Strait and Vince Gill. The band is coming off
a recent appearance at the Bama Jam Music Festival in
Enterprise, Alabama, which showcases some of the biggest
entertainers in the country. The Circus is on its way to
Mentone with every intention of blowing the roof off of the
Pavilion behind the Mentone Inn. The cost is only $10 per
person. So, make your plans to settle in around 7:30 with a
lawn chair and your favorite beverage and enjoy one of
Alabama's hottest country bands.
And, don't forget the Mentone Area Arts Council's Labor Day
Art Show to be held on the grounds of the Historic Mentone Inn
on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4. The Show
will feature a number of our local artists as well as artists
from Birmingham, Huntsville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and
Atlanta.
Also coming up in September is a great event sponsored by the
Trenton Arts Council on the 11th with artists from four states
including an eclectic group of unconventional storytellers and
poets from throughout the region. We will have more
information available on that as the date gets closer.
And, don't forget about Boom Days that celebrates the cultural
heritage of Fort Payne, Alabama. The event will be held in
downtown Fort Payne on Saturday, September 18 and features a
whole host of entertainers, arts, crafts and plenty of food
and fun.
We have several other events we will be announcing in the near
future that are really going to be great!
Well, that's it for now. As I have
said many times before, there is always a lot going on in Mentone
and plenty to do and see. And, there are a number of great events
just down the road so stay tuned.
As always, please forward this email to anyone you think
might be interested in attending any of the above events.
See you out there!
